We might be putting up the brolly to avoid April Showers, but, just like Marilyn Monroe, this is one sparkler we wouldn’t mind raining down! April’s birth stone, diamonds’ clarity suits the crisp, fresh spring light (and raindrops!). Qualities attributed to diamond birthstones over the centuries include an antidote to poison, and protection against the plague! Perhaps more relevant today, diamonds are said to enhance longevity, strength, beauty and happiness, making the wearer more imbued with balance, clarity, inner strength and abundance.
Not only April’s birthstone, diamonds are also the gemstone which marks 60th and 75th anniversaries, as well, of course, as the most popular engagement ring stone. Indeed, the earliest evidence linking diamonds to romantic love comes from the Ancient Romans, who believed that Cupid’s Arrows were tipped with diamonds. From then on, diamonds have enjoyed their reputation for enhancing the longevity and sincerity of relationships. No wonder spring is prime season for engagements and wedding planning!

So when you’ve got stars in your eyes, what should you look for in a diamond?
The essential “Diamond Four Cs”:
- Cut: to revel the true brilliance of the stone. With cuts including round, Princess, emerald and oval, being able to try a wide range of cuts and styles will reveal which speaks to you.
- Colour: graded D to Z. Colour tints in diamonds are caused by impurities, meaning traditionally, colourless diamonds have been the most desirable. However, diamonds in hues of blue, yellow, orange, red, pink, purple, steel grey and darker are increasingly being sought by those seeking a more unusual piece. Especially for The Diamond Room, we’ve sought out and sourced superior GSI graded diamonds, which are a rare white in colour.
- Clarity: As a natural element, most diamonds contain inner flaws, or inclusions, which occur during the formation process, however most aren’t even visible to the naked eye. Diamonds definitely look different when worn, seeming to come to life with the warmth and personality of the wearer. So we absolutely want you to try on, move, and hold up to the light!
- Carat: often misunderstood as quality, it’s actually a measurement of weight. The largest rough diamond ever found the Cullinan Diamond, weighed 3,106 carats (over 600 grams!)
